Transgender Culture Koh Samui

Katoey is the everyday term for a transsexual/transgendered Thai person. Watch any Thai TV drama and you will think that Thai society is very accepting of transgendered culture. Though you might also think this of the US attitude to homosexuality after watching TV comedies such as 'Will and Grace'. The reality may not be so rosy. Yet Thailand is the world leader in transgender surgery - mainly male to female. There is a reasonably large transgender community on Samui. Many work in the entertainment industry in and out of one of the cabarets - raising their profile - sometimes in not such a flattering way. It is important not to forget however many transexuals and transgendered Thai lead regular & unassuming lives doing the 9 to 5 daily routine.
